Prometheus's story
This print features my original pen and ink drawing Prometheus, part of my Remnants series—works inspired by the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in the Eastern Sierra of California.
The Prometheus tree met an untimely end in 1964 when a graduate student, unable to extract a core sample, cut it down for research. Later analysis revealed a heartbreaking discovery: he had unknowingly felled the oldest known non-clonal organism on Earth—approximately 5,000 years old. Today, only the tree's stump remains.
I’ve often reflected on the tragedy of this loss. Though I’ve never seen Prometheus in person, the story left a powerful impression on me. While drawing, I imagined its ancient skeleton reanimated, still reaching toward the sky, continuing to grow and intertwine with the landscape. This piece envisions what Prometheus might look like if it had endured—still alive, still evolving—far into a distant future.
